A Little Bit of Culture

A Saturday with nothing scheduled is a rare thing these days. It’s too hot to entertain the idea of doing anything outside so we decided to head down to the Dallas Museum of Art and the Nasher Sculpture Center.I must say I was a little skeptical at first, but I really enjoyed this excursion. The Museum of Art had an area dedicated to kids called “Creative Connections”. We spent quite a bit of time hanging out there. When  kids are enjoying themselves it is very hard to walk away, but we just had to. No way are we going to a Museum to just hang out in the kids area. This is about culture right? Just say right.

Anyway, we saw a lot of different paintings, some sculptures, and a lot of artifacts. They even had a painting by one of my favorite painters. I enjoyed his work when we saw it in Paris and this painting just added to my admiration. The painting was titled “Mountain Landscape with Approaching Storm” by Claude-Joseph Vernet. While reading the information I  find out this was only one half of the original painting, the other half, the approaching storm half, is somewhere in a private collection. Go figure, just my luck.  I still enjoyed the half I saw.

At the Nasher the kids and Mom went through a suspended spider web looking walkway. The pictures below show a much better view than I could describe. They enjoyed it as did Mom so no complaints here. The rest of the time we spent walking around viewing the various sculptures. At this point the kids were tired and wired and you parents out there know what this means. Time to go before the situation gets out of hand.

I’m not sure when we will get down there again, but we certainly recommend it for anyone contemplating a visit to the Dallas Museum District.
